How to be Happy While Doing Housework

I don’t know about you, but the words happy and housework just never seemed to go together. That is until I started using one special ingredient!

Some women will put on music and dance to make it less of a chore.

Or sitting on the couch and watching someone else clean their house might be an option.

And trying to avoid it and hope someone else will do it, isn’t the answer either.

What I have found to work are the “happy” essential oils – citrus essential oils – lemon, lime and orange.

So how does this work?

First, and the most important, is that by using essential oils to clean, you are eliminating those harmful toxic chemicals found in commercial cleaning products.

The ingredients in these products have been attributed to the rise of numerous illnesses. I could go on and on about the toxic effects of cleaning products (I’ll save that for another blog) but just know that all the chemicals in those products are harmful to your health.

Ever get a headache when walking by a perfume counter?

Our sense of smell is 10,000 times more acute than our other senses and more sensitive to thousands of chemical compounds. So when we inhale a fragrance (natural or chemical), the scent travels faster to the brain faster than any of our other senses.

And we know that the brain is the boss of our body. It controls everything we do physically and emotionally.

However, within the brain are group of structures. One of which is the limbic system –  the part of the brain associated with emotions.

So when we inhale an essential oil, the effects are felt immediately!

And in addition to other properties (which are mentioned later in the blog), citrus oils are known to be uplifting and energizing.

Now are you starting to understand how you can be happy while doing housework?

But being happy emotionally isn’t the only benefit.

Citrus essential oils are naturally:

  • Antibacterial
  • Antiseptic
  • Antifungal

All important ingredients when cleaning.

Plus you only need to combine them with a couple of inexpensive ingredients to make your cleaning solutions.  So not only will you be saving money but you won’t be supporting companies that don’t care about your health!

Here are a few of my standard cleaning recipes:

Glass Cleaner

Combine in a spray bottle:

½ cup white vinegar

15 drops Lemon essential oil

Tile Floor Cleaner

1/2 bucket water

2 cups white vinegar

20-30 drops Lemon, Lime or Orange essential oil

Counter Cleaner

Combine in a spray bottle:

½ cup peroxide

15 drops Orange essential oil

Wood Furniture Cleaner

Combine in a spray bottle:

½ cup olive oil

1 tablespoon white vinegar

15-20 drops Lemon essential oil

However, to get the full benefits of using essential oils to clean, you do need to do your homework as all essential oils are not created the same. Many companies use synthetics, toxins and chemicals in their oils.

If you would like to learn more about essential oils, the company I recommend and/or set up an essential oil consultation, here’s the link to my website:

Now you see how I have become happy while doing housework. But I’d love to hear about your experiences.

Not only is this salsa healthy but it’s healing.

When you use essential oils in recipes you get the delicious flavor from the oils plus the healing benefits. It’s a win-win.

Since 1 drop of an essential oil is very potent, dip a toothpick in the oil and stir into the recipe. You can always add more to taste.

Of course, you need to make sure that your essential oil is safe for ingesting – not all are. Check that it has a supplement fact label on the bottle. This indicates it has received the GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) from the FDA.

Great tips. I find screeching along to music usually helps. I also often meet friends for lunch on the day I do the housework, so this acts as an incentive to get it all done before I go out. No-one wants to come back tipsy and start cleaning a toilet lol!

I love it!! What a great incentive!

  2. Love the smell of citrus. While probably not as pure, I love orange glow furniture cleaner because it makes the house smell clean! And shiny! Will have to give your cleaners a try!

Yes, they do smell so fresh. Be careful of the chemicals in most commercial cleaners. You don’t want to be damaging your health. If you would like a sample of any of the oils, let me know.
