How About These Hidden Benefits of Exercising?

Exercise – love it or hate it – we all pretty much know it’s something we need to do if we want to stay healthy. But did you know that exercise has some hidden benefits? Ones we don’t usually think of when starting an exercise program.

Sure, we all know some of the main benefits of exercising:

  • stronger bones
  • more flexibility
  • weight loss
  • heart health
  • better overall health

And a lot of people start an exercise program because their doctor recommended it, a friend dragged them to the gym, or maybe for socialization. Whatever the reason, usually once exercising becomes a part of your schedule and you see physical results, you are probably more inclined to continue.

But let’s take a look at some of the hidden benefits of exercising. Ones you may not have realized when you first started an exercise program.

Ever heard of a “runners high”? It’s that euphoric feeling you get after a long run.

Now most of us probably shouldn’t be running for exercise anymore because it’s pretty tough on the body, but you can get that same “high” after doing any type of breathing exercise (Pilates, yoga) or cardio (Hula hooping, rebounder).

(Here’s a link if you would like to learn more about the benefits of Pilates or yoga, or would like to take a class:

When we breathe deeply it gets the oxygen flowing through our body and releases those HAPPY CHEMICALS throughout our body. They are actually called endorphins and create feelings of happiness and euphoria.

I know if I don’t exercise for a couple of days, my mood changes. Ask my husband! So not only does this make US feel better but makes for a much happier living environment for all.

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “move it or loose it” but that can also apply to our brain. When we exercise it boosts the chemicals in our brain that support and prevent degeneration of the hippocampus, that part of the brain for memory and learning.

Maybe you are someone who does not like to sweat. Well, you might want to get over this aversion. Sweating can help MANAGE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STRESS as well as RELEASING TOXINS from your body.

And when this happens, our SKIN IMPROVES also. Since stress and toxins are two major factors contributing to aging skin.

The more you exercise, the better you look and feel. And this boosts our SELF-ESTEEM and SELF-CONFIDENCE.

You know that feeling when your skin is glowing, your clothes fit perfect, and it’s one of those days when you can’t help but smile at everyone?

Well, yes it took some work and dedication. But aren’t the over-all benefits of exercising worth it?

I’d love to hear your comments about how you benefit from exercising. Or do you exercise??

  1. I would agree with all of it. Exercise is vital…no.matter how little we has a positive effect

    • Patti Stevens

      This is so true.

  2. I can also tell a big difference in my mood when I go without exercising. It makes me feel more energized and confident to take on the day. Great post!

    • Patti Stevens

Thank you. And energy and confidence make for a great day!

  3. Exercise is something I do to keep my blood pressure in check and to sleep better at night. When I stop exercising over a period of time, no matter how valid the reason, my BP goes up and my nights are restless. So though I don’t always feel like going to the gym, I usually push past it and go. I’m always glad I did!

Good for you! It’s amazing how many ways we can lower our blood pressure naturally. Keep up the good work!

  4. Excellent reason to exercise! I like the aspect of breathing deeper during exercise…something no one does just sitting around on the couch! 😉

    • Patti Stevens

You are so right! Deep breathing is so helpful just for better overall health.

  5. I cant tell you how much I adored this image. One of my clients always talk about “the lady in the red dress” as her ideology. 🙂

    • Patti Stevens

      I love red dresses also!!
